The Ultimate Baby-Proofing Checklist for Dads

Your baby just started crawling and suddenly every square inch of your home is a death trap you never noticed. Electrical outlets are at baby eye level. The dog's water bowl is basically a pool. That bookshelf is a climbing wall. You have a narrow window between 'they can't move yet' and 'they can reach everything' to make your home survivable. This checklist helps you do it room by room.

Use this checklist starting around 4-6 months — before they're mobile, not after. Go room by room, get on your hands and knees (literally), and see your house from baby height. You'll be horrified.

Dad Pro Tips

  • #1Crawl through your entire house on your hands and knees. Seriously. You'll see every hazard from baby's perspective — the outlet behind the couch, the coin under the table, the cord dangling from the counter. What you can't see standing up is exactly what they'll find.
  • #2Take photos of your baby-proofing setup and send them to your partner or a friend with kids for a second opinion. Fresh eyes catch things you've become blind to. A 5-minute photo review prevents a lot of 'how did they get to that?'
  • #3Buy baby-proofing supplies in bulk from Amazon — outlet covers, cabinet locks, corner guards, and furniture straps. A complete kit runs about $30-40 and covers most of a standard house. Don't buy them one at a time from the hardware store.
