The Ultimate Rainy Day Activities Checklist for Dads

It's raining. The kids are bouncing off the walls. You've already watched two movies and it's only 11 AM. Welcome to the rainy day survival guide. These are real activities that actually work — some require zero prep, some make a mess (embrace it), and none of them involve handing your kid a tablet and feeling guilty about it.

Use this checklist when you're trapped inside with kids due to weather, when screens have been going too long and you need alternatives, or when you hear 'I'm bored' for the fifth time before noon.

Zero-Prep Activities (Right Now, No Supplies Needed)

Build a fort with couch cushions, blankets, and chairsMust have

The king of rainy day activities. Strip the couch, drape blankets over chairs, throw pillows inside. It takes 5 minutes to build and entertains for hours. Read books, eat snacks, nap inside it.

Indoor hide and seek — the classic never failsMust have

Works for ages 2 and up. Little kids are terrible at hiding (feet sticking out from behind curtains) and that's what makes it hilarious. Count loud, seek dramatically.

Dance party — put on music and go nutsMust have

Turn up the volume, clear some floor space, and dance like nobody's watching. This burns energy, creates laughs, and costs absolutely nothing. Let them pick the music sometimes.

Play 'the floor is lava' with furnitureRecommended

Pillows become islands, furniture becomes safe zones. Pure physical chaos in the best possible way. You will knock something over. That's part of it.

Have a pillow fight — with rulesRecommended

Soft pillows only. No hitting the face. Declare a winner. This is primal, silly fun and sometimes dad needs to hit something with a pillow too.

Play restaurant — they take your order, 'cook' it, serve itRecommended

Give them a notepad and they'll take your order, disappear into the kitchen (or behind a couch), and bring you an imaginary meal. Tip generously.

Creative & Messy Projects

Painting or coloring session — cover the table and let it ripMust have

Lay down newspaper or a dollar-store tablecloth. Hand out paint, markers, or crayons. Don't micromanage the art. Let them create whatever they want. Frame the best one.

Playdough — homemade or store-boughtMust have

Homemade playdough takes 5 minutes (flour, salt, water, oil, food coloring). Kids can make it WITH you, which is half the activity. Then they play with it for another hour.

Cardboard box project — car, spaceship, house, robot costumeRecommended

Got an Amazon box? That's a race car. Cut a hole for the windshield, draw some wheels, and hand over crayons. A big box is worth more than any toy to a kid under 6.

Make slime or a science experimentRecommended

Glue + borax + food coloring = slime. Baking soda + vinegar = volcano. These are easy, mind-blowing to kids, and make you look like a wizard.

Bake cookies, cupcakes, or muffins togetherMust have

Baking fills time, teaches measuring, and produces a snack. Let them crack eggs (pick out the shells later). Let them decorate. The kitchen will be destroyed. Clean it later.

Games & Learning Activities

Board games or card games age-appropriate for your kidMust have

Candy Land, Uno, Go Fish, Connect Four. Simple games that teach turn-taking and losing gracefully. Let them win sometimes. Not always.

Build something with LEGOs, blocks, or magnetic tilesMust have

Challenge them: build the tallest tower, build a house for a toy, build a bridge between two chairs. Give them a mission and let them problem-solve.

Indoor treasure hunt with written or picture cluesRecommended

Hide a prize (snack, small toy, sticker) and make clues leading to it. For younger kids, draw picture clues. For older kids, write riddles. Takes 10 minutes to set up, entertains for 30.

Puzzle time — appropriate difficulty for their ageRecommended

Puzzles are a quiet activity that requires focus. Sit next to them and work on it together. It's meditative for you too. Good for after the high-energy stuff wears them out.

Read books together — build a reading pile and power throughMust have

Rainy days are made for reading marathons. Let each kid pick 3-5 books. Pile them up and read through the stack. Do voices. Make it an event.

When You're Completely Out of Ideas

YouTube kids' yoga or workout video — burn energy with structureRecommended

Cosmic Kids Yoga or GoNoodle on YouTube. Structured movement that burns energy and doesn't require you to come up with anything. Do it with them for bonus points.

Let them 'help' with chores — sorting laundry, wiping counters, sweepingRecommended

Kids under 6 genuinely think chores are fun. Let them sort socks by color, spray the counter, push the Swiffer around. It won't be done well but they'll feel important.

Set up an obstacle course with furniture and pillowsRecommended

Crawl under the table, jump over pillows, spin three times, throw a ball into a basket. Time them. Beat their record. This is basically gym class in your living room.

Video call a grandparent or family memberNice to have

Grandparents love surprise video calls. Your kid gets to perform, show toys, and burn 20 minutes of your rainy day while making grandma's whole week.

Go out in the rain — puddle jumping is a legitimate activityRecommended

Plot twist: rainy days don't have to be indoor days. Put on rain boots and go stomp in puddles. It's dirty, wet, and absolutely the highlight of their week.

Dad Pro Tips

#1Keep a 'rainy day box' stocked with coloring books, playdough, stickers, and simple craft supplies. When the weather turns, pull it out like a magician. Rotate the contents every few months so it stays exciting.
#2Alternate between high-energy and low-energy activities. Dance party, then puzzles. Obstacle course, then reading. If you only do high-energy, everyone crashes hard. If you only do low-energy, the house gets destroyed.
#3Give yourself permission to use screens for part of the day. A movie after lunch so you can sit in silence for 90 minutes is not lazy parenting — it's survival strategy.
