Christmas Present Scavenger Hunt Generator
Hide the big one. Print the clues that lead to it.
A Christmas present scavenger hunt is six to ten clues, each one hiding the next, the last one sitting on the present. Pick the rooms you're willing to hide things in, pick the age, print the cards. If your kid can't read yet, you read them out loud and act surprised at every one. That part isn't optional.
Nothing you type here is saved.

How to use it
- Tap the rooms you're willing to hide clues in (at least three), and type where the present will be.
- Pick the age, how many clues, and who's reading them.
- Hit "Make the clues" and print. You get a grown-up setup list plus the clue cards.
- The night before: cut out the cards and hide them where the setup list says. Keep card 1.
- Christmas morning: hand over card 1 and stand back.
How a Christmas Present Scavenger Hunt Works
It's a trail, not a list. Each clue leads to one hiding spot, and at that spot is the next clue. The last clue leads to the present. Here's the whole setup:
- •Hide the present first, somewhere they'd never look on their own.
- •Write or generate one clue per hiding spot, in order, ending at the present.
- •Hide clue 2 at the spot clue 1 points to, clue 3 at the spot clue 2 points to, and so on.
- •Keep clue 1 in your pocket. That's the starting gun.
- •Christmas morning, hand it over and follow them around with your coffee.
Example: An 8-Clue Hunt for a 4-Year-Old
This is the sample the generator starts from: eight rhyming clues, read out loud by a grown-up, ending at the dryer. The setup list tells you where each card goes.

Hiding Spots That Work (and Two That Don't)
The best spots are places kids already know by name and can reach: the fridge, the couch, their bed, the bathtub, the shoe rack, the tree. Rooms they'd have to ask permission to enter slow the whole thing down.
The two that don't work: the oven and the dishwasher. On Christmas morning somebody always preheats, and somebody always runs a load. Also skip anywhere the dog can reach a paper card, unless eating clue 4 is part of the plan.
For Kids Who Can't Read Yet
Pick "I'll read them out" and the clues come out a little longer and sillier, written to be heard. Read each card when they find it, then let them guess before they run. The guessing is the fun part, and wrong guesses are allowed.
Under about four, cut the trail to six clues and keep every spot in two or three rooms. Over seven, pick "My kid reads them" and stay out of it.
Tips
Walk the trail the night before
Card in hand, spot to spot. You'll catch the clue that points at a couch you moved in October.
One clue per room
Spread them out so there's running between finds. Two clues in the same room means one gets found early.
Make the last clue too easy
The finish should be fast. By clue eight they're vibrating, and nobody needs a riddle standing between a four-year-old and a box.
Number the cards
The printed cards are numbered. If one goes missing, you can skip it and point at the next spot without anyone noticing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many clues should a Christmas present scavenger hunt have?
Six for kids under five, eight for most kids, ten for older kids who want it longer. It should take about ten minutes, not half the morning.
What age does a present hunt work for?
From about three, if a grown-up reads the clues out loud. From about seven, kids can read and run it themselves.
Can I do a separate hunt for each kid?
Yes. Generate one per kid with a different final spot and different rooms, and print each kid's cards on different colored paper so nobody steals a sibling's clue.
Does this work for gifts that aren't Christmas presents?
Yes. Birthdays, an anniversary, a 'we're going to the zoo' reveal. Nothing in the trail is Christmas-specific unless you hide a card at the tree.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The rooms and the hiding spot are used once to write your clues, then they're gone.
