I post a dad joke every day, and the four-year-old now tells them back to me, badly, and gets the bigger laugh. So here's the machine. Pick a topic or go random, read the setup out loud, wait the full three seconds. The three seconds are the joke. All clean, all bad on purpose.

What Makes a Joke a Dad Joke?

A dad joke is a short, clean joke that turns on a pun or an answer so literal it hurts. "Why is a broken pencil useless? Because it's pointless." That's the whole genre.

It takes three things: a setup simple enough for a kid to follow, a punchline that's a pun or a too-literal twist, and a teller who is far more pleased with it than anyone listening. The groan isn't the joke failing. The groan is the joke working.

And the old question, when does a joke become a dad joke? When it becomes apparent. Say it slowly. A-parent. Yes, the answer is itself a dad joke. That's how deep this goes.

How to Tell a Dad Joke

Delivery is most of it. Say the setup straight, like it's a real question you genuinely want answered. Then wait. Three full seconds feels like forever and is exactly right. Kids fill the silence with guesses, and a wrong guess is half the fun.

Never laugh first. Never explain it. If nobody groans, say the punchline again, slower. That works on adults too, mostly because they want you to stop.

Tips

The pause is the joke

Setup, three seconds of silence, punchline. Rush it and it's just a pun. Hold it and it's an event.

Let them tell it back

The four-year-old gets the punchline wrong about four times in five. The fifth time she gets a bigger laugh than I ever have. Out-joked at my own bit.

Dinner, not bedtime

A good bad joke at bedtime buys you twenty more minutes of a wide-awake kid. Save them for the table or the car.

One a day

One a day is a tradition. Six in a row is a hostage situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dad joke?

A short, clean joke that runs on a pun or an absurdly literal answer, told with more confidence than it deserves. "What do you call cheese that isn't yours? Nacho cheese." The groan is the goal.

When does a joke become a dad joke?

When it becomes apparent. That's the whole answer, and it's a dad joke itself. Say it slowly: a-parent.

Are these dad jokes clean enough for kids?

Yes. The generator is told every joke has to work in front of a four-year-old and a grandparent, and every batch goes through a content filter before it reaches you. Anything that trips the filter gets thrown out, not cleaned up.

How does the dad joke generator work?

It writes five fresh jokes at a time on the topic and style you pick, then hands them over one at a time. If it's busy or resting for the day, you get jokes from the tested list on this page instead. Nothing you pick is saved.

Can I get a new dad joke every day?

Hit the button as many times as you like. We also post a dad joke of the day on TikTok at @degendadcom, usually bombing in front of the toughest crowd in the house.
